Heart Songs

at Berkeley Moving Arts, 2525 8th Street, Berkeley. CA 94710

A three day introduction to Voice Movement Therapy with Julia Norton and Anne Brownell.

If you romanticize or rage around Saint Valentine's day, it is an auspicious time to listen to, and celebrate this vital organ. The human heart has been the symbol not only of love and life itself, but also the spiritual, emotional and moral core of a human being. For centuries the heart was also believed to house the mind and continues to be a poetic reference for the soul.

In this workshop we will explore our stories around the heart through singing and vocalization, movement, costumes, props and art making. Using the core principals of Voice Movement Therapy we will journey into the unknown places in our voices and bodies, bringing movement into the stuck places and shadow into light.

Voice Movement Therapy is a dynamic system, based on the artistic & therapeutic possibilities of the singing voice. It was developed in the U.K. by Paul Newham, and is predominantly built on the work of Alfred Wolfsohn & Roy Hart. It consists of a series of physical postures with corresponding vocal configurations, which tap into previously unknown areas of the voice and strengthen existing ones.

Julia Norton VMTR (Voice Movement Therapy Registered) trained in the U.K. with Paul Newham & is an award winning singer, performer, teacher & composer. Originally from the U.K. she has been living in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 9 years.

Anne Brownell MA, LMHC, VMTR trained with Norma Canner, Penny Lewis & Paul Newham, she also taught with Paul on the U.K. and U.S.Voice Movement Therapy trainings. She established the Foundation Training in VMT in the United States, 'The Voice Unchained' and her CD 'A Journey in Song' illustrates a range of possibilities inherent in a single human voice.

Akin - It's in the blood.

Is a dark thriller about how the choices you make in life can have a profound effect on not only you, but also the people that surround you. Akin delves into two possible outcomes of the choice to reveal or conceal an extramarital affair John is having with his wife's identical twin sister. With both women pregnant by him, we see how both choices affect the life of an entire family over 32 years. The two acts present the story as a set of parallel universes, as the time line of Akin twists and turns to reveal what might lie beneath the surface of one person's actions.

DIRECTOR: BARBARA HEROUX ~ CONDUCTOR: BRETT STRADER

Lerner & Loewe and The Lamplighters - Loverly!

The Lamplighters bring their signature flair to one of America's most beloved musicals - My Fair Lady. George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion rivals the wit and sting of W.S. Gilbert in telling the story of the transformation of a cockney 'guttersnipe' into an upper class lady accepted in the best of society. It's all in the accent and the clothes. I could have danced all night.. Wouldn't it be loverly.. On the street where you live.. I've grown accustomed to her face.. the hit tunes just keep coming in this Broadway classic. Special guest Geoff Hoyle appears as the incorrigible Alfred P. Doolittle.
